6 Wireframing Tools for Designers

Online mockups made simple

Moqups is a nifty HTML5 App used to create wireframes, mockups or UI concepts, prototypes depending on how you like to call them.
Moqups is my current favorite. It’s fast, easy to use and works without a browser plug-in. Screens and buttons can be linked so you can publish a demonstration for your clients to view and use. Images can also be exported for specification diagrams.
Moqups has been created in standard HTML5 and JavaScript which makes it more impressive. Highly recommended.

Mockups offers the same speed and rough feel as sketching with pencil, with the advantage of the digital medium: drag & drop to resize and rearrange elements, make changes without starting over, and your work is clear enough that you'll make sense of them later.

Balsamiq’s only flaw is the wireframes can look a little childlike and unfinished. However it succeeds in being the missing link between the sketch pad and computer.

UXpin
A collaborative online design tool, UxPin is a design app specifically for User Experience and allows you to create wireframe and prototypes that are interactive. It provides users with a tool kit that contains common design elements and offers a huge library of custom UI elements. This is a supremely powerful tool which outputs very polished wireframes. UXpin will appeal to advanced users who want to spend more time creating beautiful full colour wireframes.

I haven’t used the collaborative element yet but with design studios becoming much more agile with remote workers, this function can only be a good thing moving forward.

Lovely Charts
Lovely Charts is a Flash version of the company’s desktop and tablet application. Functionally, it’s similar to Gliffy with a range of diagram types and export options, but you must sign-up prior to use.

Again, it offers fewer control shapes than Moqups or Lumzy and cannot output a viewable demonstration. However, you may prefer it if you’re creating written documentation.

Framebox is a good free solution for building simple wireframes
Framebox is a great, free online tool for very simple wireframing. It includes a few drag and drop elements and allows you to share the web page as a unique URL. You can also give your elements titles and descriptions to help explain their function.

iPhone Mockup is purely a wireframing tool for iPhone app UIs

Like Framebox, this is another free online tool, albeit even simpler and aimed entirely at iPhone interfaces. There are two visual styles to choose from - 'pencil' and 'illustration' - the latter being the cleaner version or the two. Designs can be shared via a unique URL.
